Kevin West began his career as a middle school teacher and coach in Lubbock, Texas in 1990. While working on his graduate degrees in counseling and administration at Texas Tech University, Kevin served as a school counselor and later as a high school assistant principal. Since coming to Colorado he has served as a counselor, building administrator and for the past 13 years as a district director in two Adams County districts.
Kevin’s targeted work to reduce dropouts in Colorado began in 2007 when he partnered with Colorado Youth for a Change to bring CYC Educational Interventionists to Adams 12 Schools. After moving from Adams 12 to District 27J in Brighton in 2013, Kevin again partnered with CYC to bring Educational Interventionists to its two comprehensive high schools and an Outreach Specialist to its Innovation and Options Programs. CYC Student Honoree
Ruby Briseño was introduced to Colorado Youth for a Change through the Educational Intervention Program at West High School in 2013. Through working with the CYC team, along with teachers and school district partners, and her own perseverance, Ruby was able to graduate on time. Last year, she enrolled in the Community College of Denver, where she continues her studies, and was recently named to the National Honor Society. Her goal is to finish her undergraduate work, major in Forensics, perhaps get her master’s degree from a top college, and work in the field. When she’s not studying or working, Ruby enjoys running, hiking, spending time with friends and family, and pursuing her goal of visiting every ice cream shop in Denver.
